With everything, it has a starting point, a birthplace you could say and with grime, arguably it turns to Bow in East London for its birthplace. Why Bow? It’s probably due to the man behind this week’s edition of Grimey Mondays, he’s quite simply is The Godfather, one of grime’s founding fathers, a man whose contribution to the genre has been nothing short of influential. Many MCs in the genre now thank this guy for giving them the inspiration to pick up the mic and spray their bars on the radio, on dubplates, on tracks or on stage at events. His influence is matched by a select few, a member of crews Roll Deep, Boy Better Know or Pay As You Go, this guy is seriously the real deal, the guy helped pave the way for grime to emerge from the garage era during the 1990s and early 00s for God’s sake!
So it’s no surprise that today, the great man was honoured by the MOBO Awards with a Paving The Way plaque, laid outside The Bow School, his former secondary school, his dad’s former secondary school too. Richard Cowie, grime pioneer, undisputed legend and recipient of his very own plaque, not bad.
The Godfather hailed from Bow, Bow E3 to be more precise so I guess he thought it’d be cool to make a tune about the place he’s from. He even talks about the same school that honoured him today, that’s how Bow E3 he is.
